Trees to decorate yourself

The design-your-own page is one big bare tree with nothing on it at all — no star, no baubles, no garland — and a column of eight decorations beside it to copy onto the branches: a star, a bauble, a bell, a candy cane, a bow, a gingerbread man, a snowflake and a string of lights. The card page has a dashed line to cut along and a dotted line to fold on, with the tree on the front and four blank lines on the back for a message.

From the tree farm to Christmas morning

The middle pages follow the tree through the season. A family chooses theirs at a snowy tree farm and drives it home tied to the roof of the car, with the dog leaning out of the window. Woodland animals decorate a fir in the forest with berries, pinecones and a star made of twigs. A kitten climbs halfway up the tree and sends the baubles flying, a toy train circles the trunk, and a family of mice sets up home among the presents underneath. On Christmas morning, two children in pyjamas open their presents under the tree while a puppy pops out of a box.

Detailed trees for adults

Six pages are long, detailed work: a Christmas tree mandala built from rings of trees, baubles, pinecones and bells; a zentangle tree whose seven tiers each carry a different pattern; an old-fashioned Victorian tree lit with candles and hung with paper chains and sweet cones; a Nordic folk-art tree with birds, tulips and Dala horses; a doodle page packed into the shape of a tree; and the words O Christmas Tree, from the old carol, in patterned letters.

Nothing is filled in black

Most Christmas tree pages print the tree solid dark and the baubles and lights as black dots. Here the tree is always an outline with white inside, every bauble and light is hollow, and so are the children’s open mouths, the deer’s hooves and the little stars around the card. The only solid black left is in the eyes and on a few small noses.

For the youngest colourists

The five easy pages have very thick outlines and big open shapes — the big tree with garlands, the smiling tree, the robin on a little tree, five tree shapes to tell apart and a page of ornaments laid out like stickers. The nine middle pages each have a scene or an activity. The six detailed pages are for an adult and an evening.
