A busy hamster day

Hamsters sleep through much of the day and wake up in the evening, ready to play. Why hamsters have such big cheeks

A hamster’s cheek pouches stretch all the way back to its shoulders. Wild hamsters fill them with seeds and grain, carry the food home and empty it into a store room in their burrow — in German, hamstern means to hoard. The burrow page shows this secret underground home in cross-section beneath a wheat field, with tunnels, a bedroom with a nest of dry grass, and a pantry full of seeds. A hamster’s front teeth never stop growing, which is why the cage page includes a wooden chew stick beside the wheel, the little house, the ladder and the water bottle.

What colour is a hamster?

The best-known pet hamster, the Syrian or golden hamster, is golden brown on its back with a cream tummy and cheeks. Pet hamsters also come in cream, white, grey and patched coats, and small dwarf hamsters are often grey with a dark stripe down the back. Leave the inside of the ears and the tiny paws pink.
