Cute sheep and lamb coloring pages

A sheep template for crafts

The template is one big sheep outline with an empty body and nothing drawn inside it. Colour it, cut it out, or glue cotton wool balls all over the body for a fluffy classroom sheep.

Ram, ewe and lamb

A male sheep is a ram, a female is a ewe and a baby is a lamb, and a group of sheep is a flock. Many rams grow thick horns that curl round in a spiral, which is how to tell the ram on the family page. Most sheep are sheared once a year in late spring — it does not hurt, a bit like a haircut — and the from sheep to sweater page follows the wool from the sheep’s back through shearing and spinning to a knitted jumper.

Shepherds, sheepdogs and the lost sheep

In the parable of the lost sheep, told by Jesus in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew, a shepherd with a hundred sheep leaves the ninety-nine to search for the one that is lost, and carries it home rejoicing. The Bible page shows the shepherd with the lamb across his shoulders. Two more pages show shepherds at work today: a young shepherd with her border collie watching her flock, and a sheepdog herding three sheep through a gate.

Nursery rhymes and bedtime

Mary Had a Little Lamb, first published in 1830, has Mary walking to school with her lamb close behind. Baa Baa Black Sheep is even older. And for bedtime there is counting sheep: a sleepy child dreaming of sheep jumping over a fence one at a time.

What colour is a sheep?

Most farm sheep are white or creamy, and their wool often looks greyish or yellowish outdoors. Some breeds have black or brown faces and legs, like the Suffolk, and some sheep are black or brown all over — which is why the black sheep from the rhyme is drawn white here, ready to be coloured any shade.
