The story of Moses

When Pharaoh ordered that the Hebrew baby boys be killed, one mother hid her son in a basket among the reeds of the Nile while his sister watched. Pharaoh’s own daughter found him, adopted him and named him Moses. Grown up, Moses fled to the land of Midian and became a shepherd, until God spoke to him from a bush that burned but was not burnt up and sent him back to tell Pharaoh, “Let my people go.” After ten plagues — frogs among them — Pharaoh let the Israelites leave, and God led them with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. You can read it in the book of Exodus.

Three pages show the most famous moment: Moses lifting his staff as the sea splits into two curling walls of water, an Israelite family walking through on dry ground with their donkey and sheep, and a detailed panorama of the whole people crossing, with fish and a turtle inside the waves. On the far shore, Moses’s sister Miriam took a tambourine and danced, and the other women followed her.

Moses and the burning bush

The easy burning bush page is just the bush in its flames with a pair of sandals in front — God told Moses to take them off, because the ground was holy. The second page shows Moses kneeling barefoot beside his sheep, shielding his eyes.

In the wilderness

In the desert God sent manna each morning, small and white like frost, which tasted like wafers made with honey, and quail in the evening. When there was no water, Moses struck a rock with his staff and water poured out. And when the Israelites fought the Amalekites, they were winning only while Moses held his hands up — so his brother Aaron and his friend Hur held up his arms until the sun went down.

Moses and the Ten Commandments

At Mount Sinai God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on two tablets of stone. The tablets on these pages are numbered I to X in Roman numerals and left without words, because Jewish, Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox and Protestant traditions divide and number the commandments differently — write in the version your family or church uses. There is a simple tablets page, Moses holding the tablets on the mountain top, and a detailed page framed by olives, grapes, pomegranates and wheat.
