What is Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is on 11 November in the United States. It honours everyone who has served in the armed forces, and especially thanks the veterans who are still with us. It began as Armistice Day, marking the moment the fighting of World War I stopped at 11 o’clock on 11 November 1918, and it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. It is not the same as Memorial Day in May, which remembers those who died in service. Many other countries keep the same date as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day.

Thank-you lettering and a card to give

The lettering page spells THANK YOU VETERANS in big bubble letters among stars and hearts. The card page folds in half along the dashed line: colour the THANK YOU front, write a message on the six blank lines inside, and give it to a veteran — a grandparent, a neighbour, or a veterans’ home or group near you.

Easy Veterans Day coloring pages

The five easy pages have big shapes and bold lines for young children: the lettering, a smiling soldier saluting, a round medal with a star on a striped ribbon, two dog tags on a chain that loops into a heart, and a bunch of poppies tied with a bow.

Why poppies?

Red poppies bloomed on the battlefields of Belgium and northern France during World War I, and the poem In Flanders Fields made them a flower of remembrance. Veterans’ groups in the United States still hand out paper poppies around Memorial Day and Veterans Day. You will find them on the easy poppy page, the wreath, the mandala and the memorial scene.

Families, parades and homecomings

The middle pages are about the people: a veteran grandpa with his medals saluting beside his granddaughter, a soldier, a sailor, a pilot and a service member in dress uniform standing together, a hometown parade with a drummer and star bunting, a mother in uniform coming home to her son, and a German shepherd service dog sitting proudly beside a pair of boots. There is also a navy ship, three jets flying over in a V, and a shadow box — the display case many families use to keep a folded flag, medals and dog tags together.

Detailed Veterans Day coloring pages

The six detailed pages suit older children and adults: a bald eagle with every feather outlined, a memorial wreath of laurel and poppies, a heart filled with bands of stars and stripes, a mandala with an eagle at its centre, a doodle page and a peaceful park scene of a veteran and his granddaughter bringing flowers to a memorial.
