What the American flag looks like

The flag of United States is thirteen horizontal stripes with a rectangle of fifty stars in the top left corner: seven red stripes and six white ones alternating, starting and ending with red, and fifty white stars on a blue rectangle in the top left corner. It is officially drawn 10:19 — that is, 10 units tall for every 19 units wide — which is the shape used on every sheet here.

The thirteen stripes stand for the thirteen original colonies and the fifty stars for the fifty states. This version has been the flag since 1960, when Hawaii became the fiftieth state.

The colour guide sheet

One of the six pages names the colours for you, in a key printed under the flag, in hollow letters so those can be coloured too. It is the sheet to use if the flag is being coloured for school and it needs to come out right; the other five leave you to it.

Nothing arrives already coloured

Flags are the one subject where colouring pages are often printed half-finished, with the dark bands already filled in. Not here. Every band, star and shape on all six sheets is left as empty white paper with a clean outline round it, so all 3 colours — red, white and blue — are yours to put in.

Which page to start with

The plain flag and the colour guide are the simplest: big open shapes and thick lines. The bunting has six flags on it and takes the longest.

Printing

Print at 100% scale rather than “fit to page”, and match the file to your paper — Letter or A4. The button at the top bundles all six into a single download.

Frequently asked questions

Are these United States flag coloring pages free?

Yes — all six download as free PDFs with no account, no email and no watermark on the artwork.

What colours is the American flag?

Red, white and blue. On the flag they go seven red stripes and six white ones alternating, starting and ending with red, and fifty white stars on a blue rectangle in the top left corner.

Is the flag already coloured in?

No. Every part of every flag on these pages is left as blank white paper, so the colouring is all still to do.

Which sheet should I use for a school project?

The colour-guide sheet — it names the right colour for every part of the flag, in a key printed underneath it, so it is hard to get wrong.

What shape is the American flag?

It is officially 10:19, height to width. Every sheet here uses that proportion rather than squaring the flag off.

Can I print these for a classroom?

Yes. Classroom use is fine and you can print as many copies as you need. Please do not resell them.

What paper size are the files?

Every page comes in both US Letter and A4, so it prints properly on either.
