A baby kangaroo is called a joey. It is born about the size of a jellybean, crawls into its mother’s pouch and stays there for about six months before it starts peeking out — and for months after that it dives back in head-first when it is scared or tired, with its legs and tail sticking out, which is exactly what one page shows. A group of kangaroos is called a mob.

Hopping and boxing

Kangaroos cannot walk backwards, but they can hop faster than 50 kilometres an hour, pushing off with their huge back feet and steering with their tail. When young males play-fight, they lean back on their tails and box with their front paws — one page shows two of them doing just that.

What colour is a kangaroo?

Red kangaroos are a rusty reddish brown (the females are often blue-grey), eastern grey kangaroos are soft grey-brown with a pale tummy, and wallaroos can be nearly black. Most have darker paws, feet and tail tips and a pale chest.
