Acorn Coloring Pages

Big Acorn coloring page

Twenty free acorn coloring pages — one big acorn, an acorn template to cut out, a kawaii acorn family, a sleepy acorn in a walnut-shell bed and a mouse in an acorn-cap hat, plus the life cycle of an oak tree, a chipmunk and a blue jay with acorns, an acorn fairy house and an acorn gnome. A wreath, a botanical study, a mandala, a zentangle acorn and an acorn pattern are for older colourists.

Every acorn cap is drawn as a criss-cross of single lines on white paper, so each acorn coloring sheet leaves the whole cap to colour.

Easy acorn pictures to color

The six easy pages have big shapes for young children: one big acorn with its stalk and an oak leaf, an acorn template of three acorns with dashed lines for cutting out, three kawaii acorns holding hands, a sleepy acorn tucked under an oak-leaf blanket, an acorn beside a pinecone and a maple leaf, and a little mouse wearing an acorn cap as a hat.

From a little acorn to a mighty oak

An acorn is the nut of an oak tree, and its scaly cap is called a cupule. The life cycle page follows one acorn round five circles: lying on the soil, splitting open as its first root goes down, a seedling with two small leaves, a young sapling and finally a great oak — which is where the old saying “mighty oaks from little acorns grow” comes from. A big oak can drop thousands of acorns in a good year, and one page shows two children collecting them in a bucket underneath the tree.

Who eats acorns?

Acorns feed a whole wood in autumn. The chipmunk stuffs its cheek pouches to carry them home, a fawn nibbles them off the forest floor, and a blue jay flies off with one in its beak. Jays bury acorns to eat in winter and forget some of them, and those forgotten acorns grow into new oak trees.

Acorn crafts and autumn decorations

Cut out the template acorns once they are coloured to make a garland or autumn cards. The basket page is a harvest still life with a pumpkin and two gourds, the wreath is a full autumn door wreath of oak and maple leaves, acorns, pinecones and berries, and two pages are pure fairy tale: a house built inside a giant acorn, and a gnome in an acorn-cap hat wheeling home a barrow of acorns.

Detailed acorn coloring pages for adults

The five detailed pages suit coloured pencils and fine markers: the autumn wreath, a botanical study of an oak sprig with a row of acorn details — an acorn, an empty cap seen from above and a cut seed — an acorn mandala, a zentangle acorn framed by patterned oak leaves, and an all-over pattern of acorns, oak and maple leaves, tiny mushrooms and berries.

What colour is an acorn?

Acorns start green and ripen to a glossy golden or chestnut brown, often with faint darker stripes. The cap is usually a duller, greyer brown than the nut, so colour the two in different shades.
