The last long days of summer

August is the month to stay cool. A boy leaps off a wooden dock into the lake while his sister splashes below and the dog watches from the planks. Two children race through a garden sprinkler, two friends sit on a picnic blanket knotting friendship bracelets — in the United States National Friendship Day falls on the first Sunday of August — and a whole family lies on a blanket after dark to watch the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks around the twelfth of August every year.

Festivals in August

At Raksha Bandhan a sister ties a decorated thread bracelet, a rakhi, around her brother’s wrist, and on the page a plate beside them holds a small oil lamp, sweets and more rakhis. At Obon, in mid-August across much of Japan, families remember their ancestors, and in many towns the festival ends with paper lanterns set floating down a river — here a girl and her little brother in summer yukata launch theirs while four more drift away. And at the county fair a boy in a cowboy hat hugs the pig that has just won a rosette.

Harvest time

Peaches and sweet corn are at their best in August. A dad lifts his daughter up to reach a peach while her brother holds a full basket, and a girl picks corn with her grandpa beside a crate of ears. In the wheat fields the harvest has begun, and a tiny harvest mouse — it climbs stalks by wrapping its tail around them — nibbles a grain among the wildflowers.

Cat Day, Dog Day and more

August has a day for almost everyone. National Watermelon Day on the third gets a smiling watermelon slice, International Cat Day on the eighth gets a tabby asleep in a basket, World Elephant Day on the twelfth gets a baby elephant spraying itself with water, and National Dog Day on the twenty-sixth gets a puppy in a paddling pool.

Detailed pages for adults

Eight hot air balloons rise over a meadow, each with its own pattern — stripes, zigzags, diamonds, stars, scales and a sunburst — like a late summer balloon fiesta such as Bristol’s. The fairground has a Ferris wheel over a carousel, food stands and strings of pennants. The mandala rings a sunburst with peaches, watermelon slices, wheat, seashells and starfish, the zentangle page fans out five patterned watermelon slices, and AUGUST is lettered in patterned capitals inside a wreath of peaches, blackberries, sunflowers and shells.

Print the whole set at once

The button at the top of this page bundles all twenty into a single download, so you can print the lot for the summer holidays rather than picking through them one at a time. Every page comes as a PDF in both US Letter and A4.

More late summer pages

School starts again in August in much of the United States, and there are twenty back to school coloring pages for it. For the rest of the season see the summer coloring pages, the beach coloring pages, the ice cream coloring pages and the sunflower coloring pages. The month after is September, and the other months are here too — May, June, October and December.
