What is a werewolf?

A werewolf is a creature from old European folk tales: a person who turns into a wolf, in many stories on the night of a full moon. The word comes from the Old English wer, meaning man, so a werewolf is a “man-wolf”. Stories about them are hundreds of years old, and today werewolves are a Halloween favourite alongside ghosts, vampires and mummies — which is why the full moon shows up on so many of these pages.
