Cute Halloween bats

The easy pages suit young children: a chubby bat flying with its wings spread, a big bat face with enormous ears and two little fangs, a kawaii bat sitting on a pumpkin with a lollipop, and a bat dressed as a little vampire with a bucket of sweets. More Halloween pages follow — a bat in a witch hat riding a broomstick past the moon, three bats over a pumpkin patch, and a flock of bats pouring out of a castle tower for older children.

Bat template and bat garland

Two pages are made to be cut out. The bat template is one big friendly bat with a dashed cutting line around it — colour it, cut it out and hang it in a window or stick it on a card. The garland page has three matching bats with a punched hole at each wing tip, so you can colour them, cut them out and string them together. Print it more than once for a longer garland.

Real bats

Bats are the only mammals that can truly fly, and there are more than 1,400 kinds. A bat’s wing is really its hand: thin skin stretched between very long finger bones, which the realistic bat page shows clearly. Many bats hunt insects at night by echolocation — they make high-pitched calls and listen for the echoes that bounce back — and one page shows a bat finding a moth that way. Bats are not blind, whatever the saying goes. Fruit bats, like the one eating a mango, spread seeds as they feed, and long-nosed bats drink nectar from cactus flowers in the desert, carrying pollen from one flower to the next.

Bat families

A baby bat is called a pup. Bats rest hanging upside down, often in caves, and a mother bat keeps her pup close and warm. One page shows a mother wrapping a sleeping pup in her wing like a blanket, another shows four bats hanging in a row between the stalactites of a cave, and a third pairs a bat with an owl, two friends who both come out at night.

Detailed bat coloring pages for adults

Bat Week

Bat Week is held every year in the last week of October, right before Halloween, to celebrate bats and the work they do eating insects, pollinating plants and spreading seeds — a good excuse to print a few of the real-bat pages alongside the spooky ones.
