Not one of these cats is printed black

This is the whole point of the set. A Halloween cat is a black cat, so almost every version you will find is a solid silhouette — which means the subject of the page arrives already coloured in, and the only thing left to do is the pumpkin beside it. On all twenty of these the cat is an outline: the body, the ears, the paws and the tail tip are all open, and the markings are drawn as separate hollow patches. Colour them black if you want to. That is the difference — it is your decision rather than the printer's.

The rest of it is open too

The witch hat has a white brim with stars on it instead of a black disc. The cauldron is a plain pot with open bubbles rising out of it. The broom is eighteen separate bristles. The lit windows are empty four-pane rectangles, the night skies are white paper, and every carved pumpkin face is an outline rather than a hole. Even the spider on its thread has a face and a white body.

Nine cats in costume

One page is a three-by-three grid of cats dressed as a witch, a ghost, a pumpkin, a bat, a vampire, a mummy, a wizard, a skeleton and a spider. It is the page most children pick first, and it works well cut into nine squares for a party table.

Five pages for adults

The sugar-skull cat is the long one — a Day of the Dead cat skull covered in marigolds and scrollwork, with its eye sockets left open and filled with petals instead of ink. Then the zentangle cat in sixteen zones, the cat mandala, the wreath of five cats, and the doodle sheet of twenty-six.

Nothing here is frightening

The cats smile, the ghost is friendly, the spider is playing, and no page shows anything being chased or hurt. The set suits a nursery as well as an older child who wants the atmosphere.
