The story of the three little pigs

Three little pigs leave home to build houses of their own. The first pig builds his house from straw and the second builds his from sticks, and both are finished in time to play. The third pig works hard all day and builds his house from bricks.

Along comes the big bad wolf. When the first pig will not let him in, the wolf huffs and puffs and blows the straw house down, so the pig runs to his brother’s stick house — and the wolf blows that down too. Both pigs run to the brick house. This time the wolf huffs and puffs until he is out of breath, but the bricks do not move. At last he climbs onto the roof and slides down the chimney, straight into a big pot of water bubbling on the fire. Out he leaps and away he runs, and the three little pigs live safely in the brick house ever after.

Coloring pages that follow the story

The pages are in story order, so children can colour the tale as they hear it. First meet the three pigs and see each one beside his finished house. Then watch them build: the first pig thatching his roof from a ladder, the second hammering his stick walls while a squirrel watches, and the third laying bricks in a hard hat. The wolf blows the roof off the straw hut, knocks at the stick house in a hat and bow tie while two pigs peek out of the window, and tiptoes across the roof of the brick house towards the chimney. In the last scenes he leaps away with a yelp while the pigs cheer, and the three pigs celebrate with a fiddle, a flute and a drum.

Story sequence sheet and stick puppets

The story sequence sheet has six picture panels with no words: the pigs leaving home, the straw hut, the stick house, the brick wall going up, the wolf at the straw hut and the pigs safe by the fire. Colour the panels, cut them apart and ask children to put the story back in order, or use them as prompts for retelling it in their own words.

The stick puppet page has the three pigs and the big bad wolf as round faces with dashed cutting lines and a handle. Colour them, cut them out and tape a craft stick to the back to act out the story.

Straw, sticks and bricks

The story is also a good way into a simple science question: why does the brick house stand? Straw is light and bends in the wind, and a wall of sticks has gaps for the wind to push through. Bricks are made of clay baked hard in a kiln and joined with mortar, so a brick wall is heavy and solid. Try building three little houses from straw, lolly sticks and building blocks, and see which one stands up to a hairdryer or a fan.
