Every window is empty

Houses are usually drawn with dark glass in the windows and a black doorway, because that is how a building reads at a glance. It also decides the colour for you and leaves a child with a page full of solid black rectangles. Not here — every window on all twenty pages is blank white paper with the glazing bars drawn as single lines over the top, and every door is white with plank lines and a handle.

The same care runs through the rest. Roofs are rows of separate shingle curves rather than a dark slab, the thatch on the cottage is long single lines, snow is white paper with one soft edge line, and the log cabin’s walls are stacked outlines with white showing between every log.

The plain house is the simplest page here — a square, a triangle, two windows and a door, drawn with very thick lines. The Victorian house, the town scene, the patterned house and the dream house are the slow ones and work better with fineliners than pencils.
