May is busier than it looks. It opens with maypoles and Cinco de Mayo, runs through Mother’s Day in the middle, and finishes with the end of the school year — the last week of term, the thank-you card for the teacher, the graduation cap. This set follows that shape rather than just drawing flowers twenty times, and the garden fills in around it: ladybirds, bees, snails, frogspawn and the first strawberries.
Two pages for Mother’s Day
The card page is a whole card front to colour, cut out and give: a blank ribbon banner across the top, a big empty heart frame in the middle to draw a picture into, three blank ruled lines underneath, and a fold line down one side. Around it sit the things to decorate it with. The second page is breakfast on a tray seen from above — teapot, toast, a boiled egg, a bowl of berries and a little blank card propped at the corner.
For the end of the school year
The thank-you page is a classroom board with a completely empty panel, because the message is the child’s to write; around it are the pencils, the apple, the globe and the stack of books. The graduation page has a cap with its tassel, a rolled scroll with nothing written on it, five patterned balloons and a medal. Both were drawn with the blanks left genuinely blank rather than pre-filled with a slogan.
Nothing is filled in black
May is full of the things that usually arrive as solid ink. A ladybird’s spots and a bee’s stripes are the classic case, and every one of them here is an outlined shape with a white middle — rings and bands to colour, not black blobs. The same goes for the ladybird’s head, the classroom board, the graduation cap and the tadpoles, all of which are normally printed dark and are white here. The pond water is plain paper with a few ripple lines on it.
For the youngest colourists
The five easy pages have very thick outlines and big open shapes — the ladybird fills the sheet with six large hollow spots, and the snail’s shell is four wide bands each with a different pattern in it. The nine middle pages have a scene or an activity. The six detailed pages — the mandala, the honeycomb, the nine patterned minibeasts, the May blossom study, the garden plan and the Time to Bloom lettering — are for an adult and an evening.

Frequently asked questions
Which pages suit a toddler?
The big ladybird, the snail and the Hello May lettering. All three have very thick outlines and only a handful of large shapes to fill.
Is there a Mother’s Day card we can actually make?
Yes. One page is a full card front with a fold line down the side — colour it, cut it out and fold it. The banner, the heart frame and the writing lines are all left blank so the child fills them in.
Can I use the calendar page for any year?
Yes. The grid is five rows of seven boxes — thirty-five in all, which is what a thirty-one-day month needs — and every box is printed empty. The child writes the dates in, so the same sheet works every May.
Are the ladybird spots and bee stripes solid black?
No. Every spot is a hollow outlined circle and every stripe is an outlined band with a white middle, so they are shapes to colour rather than blocks of ink. The only solid black anywhere in the set is the small pupil inside an eye.
Which pages work for the end of the school year?
The thank-you teacher board, which has an empty panel for the child’s own message, and the graduation page with its cap, blank scroll and balloons.
