Flowers are the best subject to learn colour on

A flower gives you permission to be wrong. Nobody can tell you a petal is the incorrect shade, because somewhere a real one is that colour, and the shapes are large and separate enough that a child can work one petal at a time without losing their place.

Twenty flowers, not twenty daisies

Every page is a different plant rather than the same bloom rearranged: a daisy, a rose, a sunflower, tulips in a pot, a lotus on the water, a clump of daffodils, poppies in a field, a moth orchid in a pot, a cherry blossom branch, a cut bouquet, a window box, a hanging basket, a wildflower meadow and a flower crown — plus the four pattern pages. Making petals look round

The trick is to keep the darkest colour at the base of each petal, where it meets the centre, and let it fade outward toward the rim. Even with pencils, two passes at the base and one at the tip will make a flat outline look like it curves.

For a long quiet session
