A day at the seaside

The middle pages are the things people actually do at the beach. Two children build a giant sand turtle and press seashells into its shell. A girl throws a disc for a dog who leaps out of the waves to catch it. Four friends play volleyball on a roped-off court, three children fly a fish kite, a diamond kite and an octopus kite over the dunes, and two more fish off the end of a wooden pier while a pelican keeps a hopeful eye on their bucket.

Life at the water’s edge

The beach belongs to its animals too: a hermit crab choosing between three empty shells, a seagull that has just snatched an ice cream, and — on a moonlit night — baby sea turtles climbing out of their nest and scurrying down the sand to the waves. For older colourists, one page cuts straight through the waterline, with a palm-fringed beach above and a snorkeller meeting a turtle over a coral reef below.

A beach scavenger hunt

The scavenger hunt is a beach scene with a seagull, a sun hat, a crab, a bucket and spade, a starfish and a beach ball hidden in it. Below the picture, each of the six has its own little box and an empty square to tick, so a child can hunt, tick and then colour the whole scene.

Almost nothing is filled in black

Seagulls’ wingtips, the lifeguard’s whistle, the planks of the pier, the turtles’ nest and the sunglasses in the beach bag are all drawn as outlines with white inside, so they can be coloured. The only solid black left is in the eyes and a few tiny details — the wingtips of some distant gulls and the seeds in a slice of watermelon.

For the youngest colourists

The five easy pages have very thick outlines and big open shapes — the palm tree island, the seagull, the hermit crab, the beach hut and a page of beach things laid out like stickers. The nine middle pages each have a scene or a game. The six detailed pages — the beach mandala, the patterned beach huts, the tropical island, above and below the waves, the doodle page and the Sun Sand Sea lettering — are for an adult and an evening.
