The hair and the scales are yours

These are the two things mermaid pages usually get wrong. Long hair is normally drawn as one solid dark shape and a tail as a dark texture, and between them that is most of the drawing gone before you start. On every page here the hair is separate flowing strands with white paper between them, and every scale is its own small open crescent — so you can run a gradient down the tail or make each strand a different colour.

The treasure is not a black hole

An open chest photographs as a dark opening, which is why most versions print it filled in. Here the inside is white and every coin is its own outlined circle, so the pile is something to colour rather than a shadow to work around. The same goes for the deep water behind the jellyfish and the turtle — open, not shaded.

Company under the water

Five pages pair her with something: a seahorse nearly her own height with a coiled tail, a sea turtle whose shell is thirteen separate plates, a dolphin, a bloom of seven jellyfish, and the chest with its pearls and rings.

Easy through to detailed

The chibi mermaid, the baby mermaid and the single tail are the simplest. The portrait sits in the middle — large and forgiving, but with hair worth taking time over. The wreath, the jellyfish page, the mandala, the patterned mermaid, the shell frame and the doodle sheet of twenty-six are the long ones.
