The instinct on an underwater page is to fill the whole background solid blue, and it flattens everything. These pages are drawn so you do not have to: the water is suggested with a few open ripple lines and the rest is white paper. Colour the animals, the coral and the seaweed, tint a band near the surface if you like, and the eye supplies the ocean.
Every scale is a shape
The tropical fish and the sea turtle are both built from large closed panels — overlapping scales, hexagonal shell plates — which makes them unusually good for a child who likes filling one compartment at a time. They also work as a colour-by-your-own-rules exercise: alternate two colours around the shell and it comes out looking designed.
Nothing is a silhouette
Whales and octopuses are the animals most often printed as solid dark shapes. Every animal here is a hollow outline — the only solid black is the pupils of the eyes — so a whale can be grey, blue, pink or striped.
The three long ones
The coral reef, the under-the-sea scene and the patterned sea turtle are drawn for adults. The reef page has no single subject at all — it is corals and urchins edge to edge, and it takes a while.
