Whale Coloring Pages

Nothing is coloured in already

Whales are almost always drawn dark on top with a pale belly. It is what they look like, and on a colouring page it means most of the animal arrives already filled in. Not here — every whale in this set is blank white paper inside one clean outline, with a single line marking where the pale underside begins, so the whole animal is yours to colour.

The same goes for the sea. Water is usually shown by shading everything, which would swallow half of every page. Here it is drawn as separate wavy lines, hollow bubble rings and outlined droplets, so the paper stays white right up to the animal.

Jonah and the whale

Four pages tell the story. The ship pitching in the storm with the sailors holding the rail; the great whale rising from the sea with Jonah safe on its jaw; a cut-away view of the inside, where Jonah kneels and prays under twelve curving ribs; and the whale bringing him back to dry land, where he steps onto the sand with his arms raised.

None of them is drawn as a dark cave. The inside of the whale is the brightest part of that page, and the open mouth is filled by Jonah rather than by black ink.

Six kinds of whale

A humpback with flippers almost a third of its body length and knobbles along its snout. A blue whale — the largest animal that has ever lived — with a diver drawn alongside it, tiny, to show the scale. A beluga, round-headed and finless, among the floating ice. A sperm whale with its great square head, diving after a giant squid. And a mother swimming with her calf.

A whale to cut out

One page is a whale template with a dashed line all the way round it. Colour it first, then cut it out — it works best printed on thicker paper or card.

Which page to start with

The simple whale is the easiest page here — a few big rounded shapes with very thick lines. The whale mandala, the patterned whale and the realistic humpback study are the slow ones and work better with fineliners than pencils.
