The caps are not printed red

Almost every mushroom colouring page online arrives with the cap filled in dark and the spots knocked out of it in white. It reads well as a thumbnail and it takes away the biggest shape on the page. Here the cap and the spots are both open — only the outlines separate them — so the whole toadstool is yours. The same goes for the gills: on every page they are drawn as a fan of separate lines with white paper between them, rather than the dark band a photograph would show.

Eight species, drawn properly

One sheet is a specimen page: a fly agaric with its ruffled collar, a scaly parasol, a ridged chanterelle, a button mushroom, a honeycombed morel, a barrel-stalked porcini, a cluster of oyster mushrooms and a puffball — eight genuinely different shapes rather than eight versions of the same toadstool. A second sheet takes it further and cuts three of them in half to show the gills, the pored underside and a young button still wrapped in its veil.

Woodland scenes

A fairy ring of twelve toadstools on a clearing, a fallen log with bracket fungi growing along it, a close view of the forest floor among fallen leaves, and a view looking straight up through a grove of giant mushrooms so the caps spread overhead like a canopy.

A mouse sheltering under a cap from the rain, a hedgehog walking through a mushroom patch, a snail climbing a stalk, a bird perched on a cap, a rabbit sitting among toadstools, and a gnome with a lantern under the largest mushroom on the page.

For older colourists
