A squirrel's tail is the part that usually arrives ruined — scribbled in as a dark bushy mass with nothing left to do. Not here. Every tail in this set is drawn as a clean outline with only four or five fine lines inside it, so it stays white paper and you decide whether the squirrel is grey, red or something it has never been.

The same care goes into everything around it. Every acorn cup is open white paper with a criss-cross of thin lines rather than a solid brown cap, the tree bark is a few long lines rather than cross-hatching, the toadstool caps have hollow spots, and the hedgehog's prickles are twenty separate strokes rather than a dark lump.

A template for cutting out

One sheet is not really a colouring page at all. It is a single bold squirrel outline with almost nothing inside it — no fur, no toes, no whiskers — and a smooth simple edge, meant for tracing round, cutting out or using as a craft shape. Squirrels doing squirrel things

Burying an acorn and patting the earth down, peeping out of a hole in a tree, sheltering under an oak leaf in the rain, carrying a whole basket of acorns, sharing nuts with a hedgehog, and sitting on a fence rail arguing with a bird. There is a flying squirrel gliding between two trees with its skin membrane spread out like a kite, which is a real animal and not a joke. For older children and adults

The realistic squirrel is drawn as a proper study — correct proportions, whiskers, and fur suggested by long flowing lines rather than shading. The patterned squirrel splits into about twelve panels of zentangle work, and the mandala builds rings of squirrels, acorns, oak leaves and pine cones out from a face at the centre.

Which page to start with

The template and the big squirrel with the acorn are the most forgiving — thick lines and large open areas. The realistic study, the patterned squirrel and the mandala are the slow ones and work better with fineliners than pencils.
