Easy koala colouring sheets

The first five pages have big shapes and thick lines for young children: a round koala clinging to a eucalyptus branch, a chibi koala nibbling a gum leaf, a big koala face with a leaf tucked behind one ear, a baby koala fast asleep across a branch under the moon, and a koala in a bow tie waving with a heart balloon.

Is a koala a bear?

No — people often say “koala bear”, but a koala is a marsupial, like a kangaroo or a wombat, and carries its baby in a pouch. Koalas live in the eucalyptus forests and woodlands of eastern and south-eastern Australia and eat almost nothing but eucalyptus leaves. Those leaves give very little energy, so koalas sleep or rest for around 18 to 20 hours a day, and they get most of the water they need from the leaves as well. Each front paw has two thumbs for gripping branches, which is why the koala on the first page can hold on so tightly.

Joeys and koala families

A newborn koala is about the size of a jelly bean. It crawls into its mother’s pouch and stays there for about six months, then rides on her back until it is big enough to climb on its own — which is the mother koala and joey page. Other pages show a koala family on a branch with one joey hanging upside down, a koala handing a leaf to a kangaroo with a joey of its own, and a koala asleep in the fork of a gum tree while a kookaburra keeps watch. Orphaned and injured joeys are raised by wildlife carers, who feed them milk from a bottle, and one page shows a girl doing just that.

Koalas on holiday

A few pages are just for fun: a koala at the beach with a surfboard and a sandcastle, a koala in a flower crown, a koala reading in a hammock, and a koala in a Santa hat decorating a little gum tree — Christmas falls in the middle of summer in Australia.
