Cow print, and a cow to pattern yourself

People search for cow print as a pattern in its own right, and nobody seems to draw it as a coloring page. One sheet here is exactly that — twenty-two large irregular patches spread across the page with white between them, several with a second patch nested inside. Another page is a cow with a completely blank body: no patches at all, and a row of eight pattern samples along the bottom to copy from if you want ideas. The markings are yours to invent.

Six breeds on one sheet

Most cow collections draw the same cow twenty times. One page here puts six clearly different cattle side by side — an angular Holstein dairy cow, a shaggy Highland, a rangy Texas Longhorn with horns wider than it is long, a fine-boned Jersey, a heavy hornless Angus bull and a blocky white-faced Hereford — drawn so the differences in build, horns and markings are obvious at a glance.

Three pages are Highland cattle, because they are the most distinctive cow there is: one standing square-on with its fringe over its eyes, one with a calf beside it in rough pasture, and a close-up portrait built from around two hundred separate locks of hair, every one an outline you can colour individually.

Nothing is printed dark for you

A cow is the hardest animal to draw for colouring, because the thing that makes one recognisable is a pattern of black patches — and on almost every page you will find, those patches arrive already filled in, which removes the best part of the picture. Not here. Every patch in this set is a hollow outline: a line around some white paper. So is every muzzle, every hoof, every horn, the milk in every churn and the long hair of the Highland coats. There is no hatching or shading anywhere.

Easy through to detailed

The toddler page is one enormous cow with three patches and about twelve areas on the whole sheet. The middle pages will hold a school-age child for half an hour. The detailed pages — the Highland portrait, the zentangle cow, the mandala, the stained glass window and the doodle sheet of thirty — will take an adult most of an evening.
