Search for dog colouring pages and a large share of the results are cartoon dogs from films and television. These are not those. They are drawn as dogs: a retriever standing under a tree, a dachshund in a spotted jumper, a mother lying down while her puppies climb over her. A child who has a dog at home recognises far more of themselves in these than in a branded face.
Nothing is pre-filled black
Dogs get printed as solid silhouettes more than almost any other animal, and a silhouette gives a child nothing to do. Every dog here is a hollow outline — coat, ears, collar and paws — so a dog can come out black, golden, brown, spotted or any colour at all without fighting ink that is already on the paper. The only solid black is small: the pupils of the eyes, and a few noses.
Fur without hatching
Fur is usually suggested with fine hatching, which looks good in a printed book and colours badly. On these pages the retriever’s feathered chest and tail are drawn as a few long outlines instead, so they can be filled, left white, or ignored.
The three long ones
The patterned dog, the dog mandala and the flower-framed dog are detailed pages for adults. The patterned dog has enough separate compartments to use every pencil in the box.
Printing
Print at 100% scale rather than “fit to page”, in Letter or A4 to match your paper.
