Born to pull a sled

Siberian huskies come from north-eastern Siberia, where the Chukchi people bred them to pull light sleds over long distances in bitter cold, working as a team and needing little food. Their thick double coat keeps them warm at forty below, and they sleep curled up with their bushy tail over their nose. In 1925 relays of sled dog teams carried medicine hundreds of miles across Alaska to the town of Nome during an outbreak of diphtheria, and huskies still race today. Two pages show them at work: a child driving a small team across the snow, and a musher’s team racing along a forest trail between snowy pines.

Husky puppies

The easy pages start with the puppies. One sits in the snow with its tongue out, one bows down to play with a striped ball, and one in a scarf tries to catch snowflakes on its tongue beside a little snowman. There is a basket of four puppies — one peeking over the rim, one yawning, one chewing the blanket and one fast asleep — and a mother husky curled in the snow with three pups tucked against her.

Life with a husky

Huskies are friendly, playful and full of energy, and several pages show what that looks like at home: a girl hugging her husky while it licks her face, a husky leaping for a frisbee, a boy hiking up a mountain path with his husky wearing its own backpack, two children in a snowball fight with a husky jumping between them, and a tired husky asleep in its bed among its toys. Huskies are famous for howling rather than barking, and one page has a husky howling at a full moon.

What colour is a husky?

Huskies come in black and white, grey and white, red and white, sable, and all white, and their eyes can be blue, brown, or one of each. The mask around the eyes and the saddle along the back are left as outlined shapes on every page, so a child can colour a classic grey-and-white husky or invent one of their own.
