January and February are the long part of winter and the part with nothing to print for. Every page in this set is snow, cold and warm clothes rather than tinsel, which means it does not look out of date the week after Boxing Day. Teachers running a winter unit can use the whole thing without a single religious or commercial reference in it.
Colouring snow
Snow is the one subject where leaving the paper alone is the right answer. Colour the sky, the scarves, the cabin and the trees, and leave the drifts white — a pale blue shadow along the underside of each drift is enough to make it read as snow rather than as an unfinished page. The same trick works on the polar bear and the snowman, which are both white animals on white ground.
Every eye is an outline
Winter animals are usually printed as black silhouettes with black dot eyes, which leaves a child nothing to do. The penguin here is a hollow outline from beak to feet, so its back can be any colour at all.
The three long ones
The cabin, the cardinal and the snowflake mandala are drawn at a density meant for pencils and patience. The cardinal has every feather outlined separately and is the closest thing in the set to a wildlife illustration.
