Golden retriever puppies

Bred to fetch

Golden retrievers come from the Scottish Highlands, where they were bred in the 1800s to fetch birds from lakes and marshes. Their thick, water-repellent coat keeps them warm in cold water, and their “soft mouth” lets them carry things without biting down — which is why so many goldens walk around with a toy, a stick or somebody’s slipper. That love of water and of carrying things shows up across the set: a retriever splashing out of a lake with a ball, one leaping to catch a frisbee at the beach, and one diving into a pile of autumn leaves.

Gentle family dogs

Friendly, patient and eager to please, golden retrievers are among the most popular family dogs in the world, and they are often trained as guide dogs, assistance dogs and therapy dogs. Others show a boy hugging his golden while it licks his cheek, a golden retriever’s birthday party with a bone on the cake, and a big gentle dog lying on a rug with a tiny kitten curled between its paws.

What colour is a golden retriever?

Every shade of gold, from pale cream to a deep reddish gold, often a little lighter on the feathering of the legs, chest and tail. Try two or three shades of yellow and orange pencil layered together, and leave some strands lighter for a glossy coat.
