Elves at work

In the toy factory three elves stand along a conveyor belt — one painting a drum, one tapping a wheel onto a toy train, and one in round spectacles checking a spinning top through a magnifying glass. Two more wrap presents at a long table with a roll of starry paper and a wobbly pile of finished parcels. At the North Pole post office, one elf climbs a stepladder to slot letters into the pigeonholes while another tips a whole sack of them into a basket. And in the sweet kitchen, two elves twist a giant candy cane beside a bubbling pot, with finished canes hung up to dry.

Elves at play

When the work is done: a snowball fight on a snowy hill with a pyramid of spare snowballs, a marching band with a star baton, a drum, a trumpet and a tuba bigger than the elf playing it, and an elf giving a big hug to the teddy bear he has just finished making.

Elves from older stories

Two pages step outside the North Pole. A woodland elf in a cloak of leaves walks a forest path by lantern light, past an owl and a ring of toadstools. And a Scandinavian tomte — the little Christmas elf of the farms, with a hat pulled down over his eyes and a beard to his knees — stands by the barn with his bowl of Christmas porridge, left out for him on Christmas Eve as the old tradition says.

Nothing is filled in black

Elf belts, buckles and curly shoes are usually printed solid black. Here they are outlines with white inside, and so are the pigeonholes in the post office, the hollow in the old tree and the stripes on the candy-cane chimney. The only solid black on any page is in the eyes.

For the youngest colourists

The five easy pages have very thick outlines and big open shapes — the elf with a present, the elf girl, the baby elf in a stocking, the teddy-bear hug and a page of elf hats, shoes and bells laid out like stickers. The nine middle pages each have a scene or an activity. The six detailed pages — the elf mandala, the zentangle elf, the elf village, a close-up portrait, the doodle page and the Little Helpers lettering — are for an adult and an evening.
