Gingerbread men

The easy pages start with the gingerbread man himself — arms out, buttons down his front, wavy icing at his wrists and ankles — then a gingerbread girl with a bow and a skirt, and the gingerbread man from the story, caught mid-stride and laughing as he runs. The middle pages give him a family of five holding hands, a day in the snow with a sledge and a snowball, and a sleigh ride pulled by gingerbread reindeer.

The story on one page

One page tells the whole folk tale in a single picture: the old woman at the cottage door with her rolling pin, the old man beside her, the cow, the horse and the pig chasing along the winding path, and the gingerbread man out in front — running straight towards the river, where the fox is sitting and waiting.

Gingerbread houses

For the houses, the easy page is a simple cottage with a few big shapes, and the middle page is a house covered all over in sweets — a roof of round shingles and gumdrops, icicles of icing, a chocolate-bar door and a candy-cane fence. There is a gingerbread house inside a snow globe, and for older colourists a whole gingerbread village street and a three-storey gingerbread mansion with towers.

Templates to decorate and cut out

The template sheet has six gingerbread cookie shapes — a man, a girl, a house, a star, a tree and a mitten — each left completely blank with a dashed line around it for cutting out. Draw on your own icing and buttons, colour them in, and cut them out for a garland or a card. The build-your-own page does the same for a house: a big plain house on one side and ten sweets and icings on the other.

Nothing is filled in black

Gingerbread buttons are usually drawn as solid black dots. Here every button is a hollow ring, every window is white, and the cookies themselves are outlines rather than dark brown shapes — so you can colour them any shade you like. The only solid black on any page is the small pupil inside an eye.
