Fairy Coloring Pages

Fairy on a Flower coloring page

Twelve free fairy coloring pages — a fairy with a wand, a fairy on a flower, the tooth fairy flying off with a baby tooth, a toadstool house, a tiny door in a tree, a fairy watering her garden, a fairy riding a dragonfly and two fairy friends on a branch, plus a realistic fairy with a bird on her hand, a fairy mandala, a woodland glade and a patterned fairy for older colourists.

Fairies from folklore rather than from a film, so nothing in the set belongs to anybody.

A tooth fairy coloring page

The tooth fairy has a page of her own: a smiling fairy in a puffed-sleeve dress flying up from a pillow, a star wand in one hand and a big, grinning baby tooth hugged in the other, while the little pouch she left behind waits on the pillow. It is a good page to print on the night a first tooth comes out — the stars, the pillow and the tooth are big simple shapes a young child can colour before bed.

Wings are the reason these pages work

A fairy wing is a large closed shape with a pattern inside it, which makes it one of the most forgiving things a child can colour: hard edges, nothing ambiguous, and room to be as neat or as wild as you like. Every wing here is drawn as an outline with simple shapes inside rather than as a shaded, feathery blur.

A realistic fairy for older colourists

Most fairy pages are cartoons. The realistic fairy is drawn with real proportions instead — long wavy hair in separate locks, a crown of tiny flowers, a long-sleeved gown and butterfly wings divided into dozens of cells — holding out her hand to a small bird, framed like a portrait. It suits teenagers and adults who want a fairy that looks like an illustration rather than a sticker.

Three pages without a fairy in them

The toadstool house, the fairy door in the tree trunk and the fairy mandala have no figure in them. They are there because they are often the pages children come back to — a little door at the foot of a tree does more for the imagination than another winged girl, and the house and the door are the easiest pages in the set to colour well.

Everyone is dressed

Fairy illustration has a habit of drifting towards figures in very little clothing. Every fairy on these pages is properly dressed — petal dresses, a puffed-sleeve frock, a long gown. It is a children’s set and it is drawn like one.

The long ones

The patterned fairy, the fairy mandala and the woodland glade are drawn for adults. The glade has three fairies, giant toadstools and hanging lanterns packed edge to edge.
