Download PDF A4 PNGThe scales are yours
Scales are what makes a dragon a dragon, and they are also the thing most colouring pages print as a dark texture — which takes the best part of the drawing away before you start. On every page here the scales are rows of separate open crescents with white paper inside each one, so you can run a colour along the back, fade it down the belly, or make every scale different. The wing membranes are the same: ribs divide them into panels, and every panel is empty.
The fire is not printed in
A flame is usually drawn as a solid shape. Here each plume is three flame outlines nested one inside the other, like the layers of a candle flame, so you can go yellow at the middle and red at the tips. The frost the ice dragon breathes works the same way.
Seven kinds of dragon
Western, Chinese, sea, ice, baby, chibi and a head portrait — each one drawn with the features that separate it: fins instead of wings on the sea dragon, crystal spines and icicles on the ice dragon, whiskers and a long serpent body on the Chinese one.
Six pages for older colourists
The dragon eye is an extreme close-up — an iris of twenty-four segments, a hollow slit pupil and around a hundred and forty scales, all open. The patterned dragon divides the body into eighteen zones, each with its own infill. Then the mandala, the western dragon with flames, the Chinese dragon and the doodle sheet of twenty-six.
Pages for younger children
The chibi dragon, the two baby dragons, the sleeping dragon and the hatchling are round, thick-lined and friendly — about twenty-five areas each. Nothing in the set is frightening, and no page shows anything being hurt.
Printing
Print at 100% scale rather than “fit to page”, and match the file to your paper — Letter or A4. The button at the top bundles all twenty into a single download.
