The first of April gets three pages. The easy one is a big jester’s hat with three floppy points and a bell on every tip, each point patterned differently. The middle one is a joke-shop shelf — a jack-in-the-box, a whoopee cushion, a pair of glasses with a false nose and moustache, a snake bursting from a can, a squirting flower and a set of chattering teeth. The detailed one is a doodle page packed with every silly thing a joke shop sells.
Passover
The Seder table page shows the Seder plate with all six of its traditional foods — the shank bone, the roasted egg, the bitter herbs, the charoset, the parsley and the lettuce — surrounded by the covered matzah, Elijah’s cup, the salt water, the candles and a vase of spring flowers. There is no writing on it, so it works for any family.
Spring, properly
April is when the spring actually arrives, and several pages show it happening. Tulip, daffodil, hyacinth and crocus bulbs are drawn underground with their roots, each with its flower above the soil — a page that works in a classroom. A hedgehog pushes out of its winter nest into the first snowdrops and crocuses. A farmyard is full of new babies — a foal, a calf, three piglets, a kid goat, a lamb, ducklings and chicks. And two pages go abroad: a picnic under the cherry blossom, and a windmill standing over the tulip fields.
Nothing is filled in black
The rain cloud is white, the soil under the bulbs is white, the canal is white and every raindrop is a hollow outline. The lamb’s face and hooves, the hedgehog’s spines and the cherry trees’ trunks are all outlines to colour rather than solid ink. The only solid black on any page is the small pupil inside an eye.
For the youngest colourists
The five easy pages have very thick outlines and big open shapes — the smiling rain cloud and its raindrop friends, the lamb, the chick peeping out of a rain boot, and the jester’s hat. The nine middle pages have a scene or an activity. The six detailed pages — the mandala, the patterned umbrellas, a rainy street in town, the April Fools doodle page, the Japanese cherry blossom garden and the April Showers lettering — are for an adult and an evening.
