The planet first

A lot of Earth Day pages are really recycling posters. This set starts with the thing itself: the Earth drawn as a big friendly globe with a face, then cupped in two hands with a sprout growing from the top, then surrounded by a panda, a polar bear, an elephant, a sea turtle, an orca, a zebra, a kangaroo and a toucan, and finally drawn for older colourists as a globe whose continents are packed with leaves, ferns and flowers while the oceans are filled with waves, fish and turtles.

The recycling sorting game has four bins across the top, each labelled with a picture rather than a word — a newspaper, a bottle, a jar and a can — and twelve pieces of rubbish scattered below with room to draw a line from each one to the right bin. The water cycle page puts the sun, a cloud, the rain, a mountain and a river into one landscape joined by four arrows. The compost bin is cut away down the front to show four layers and the worms working through them. The promise poster has five checkboxes, each with a small picture hint, a blank line beside each one and an empty frame to draw in.

Wild places worth keeping

Five pages go to the places Earth Day is about: a rainforest with a sloth, a toucan, a monkey, a jaguar and a tree frog at every level; polar bears on the sea ice with a seal and a narwhal; otters playing in a clean river; a kelp forest with a sea otter and an octopus; and a beach being cleaned up by three children with a sack and a litter-picker.

Almost nothing is filled in black

This was the hardest set yet for it, because so many of the animals are black in real life. The zebra’s stripes and hooves, the orca’s body, the sea urchins, the toucan’s back and the panda’s ears and paws are all drawn as outlines to colour here rather than blocks of ink. The only solid black left anywhere is the small area around an eye — which on the panda and the orca is the whole eye patch, kept because the eye sits inside it.

For the youngest colourists

The five easy pages have very thick outlines and big open shapes — the smiling planet fills the sheet, and the recycling bin is one large friendly shape with a handful of things around it. The nine middle pages have a scene or an activity. The six detailed pages — the mandala, the nine patterned endangered animals, the green city of the future, the globe made of nature, the kelp forest and the Love Our Planet lettering — are for an adult and an evening.
