Angels from the Christmas story

In the Annunciation page Mary kneels in prayer beside a stool with an open scroll while the angel Gabriel greets her, holding a stem of lilies, with a dove between them. On the hillside page an angel appears in rays of light above an old shepherd shielding his eyes, a boy holding a lamb and three sheep round a campfire. The Bethlehem page is the most detailed of the three: an angel flies above the walled town, its stone houses stacked up the hill, under one great star whose rays reach down to a small stable. All three suit a Sunday school or a nativity lesson.

Guardian angels and little angels

The guardian angel stands close behind a boy and his little sister as they cross a wooden footbridge over a stream, wings spread around them. A small angel kneels in prayer on a tasselled cushion beside a candle and a sleeping lamb, three little angels sing on a cloud with a candle, a songbook and a handbell, and two cherubs hold up a blank ribbon banner — room for a name, a verse or a greeting.

Angel wings

Two pages are just the wings. The easy one is a pair of big feathered wings joined by a heart, with every feather a separate shape large enough for a crayon. The zentangle wings fill every feather with its own pattern — scales, spirals, chevrons, little flowers — and take an evening.

Angels for the Christmas tree

One page puts an angel on top of a little Christmas tree hung with baubles and a bead garland. Another has four angel ornaments to cut out, each with its own gown border and a dashed cutting line: colour them, cut them out, punch a hole through the loop above the halo and hang them on the tree. And for a snowy day there is a girl in a bobble hat making a snow angel.

A set for the whole family

The six easy pages have thick outlines and big open shapes for a young child. The eight middle pages — the tree topper, the choir, the harp, the guardian angel, the shepherds, Gabriel and Mary, the cherubs and the ornaments — will hold a school-age child for half an hour. The six detailed pages — the mandala, the stained glass window, the zentangle wings, the angel with doves and roses, the Renaissance angel and Bethlehem — are for adults.

What to colour them with

Crayons and markers suit the easy pages. The stained glass angel is made for bold colour — give each piece of glass its own shade. The zentangle wings, the mandala and the Renaissance angel are better with coloured pencils, which keep the small shapes crisp.
