The parts of the day everyone actually does

Most Independence Day collections are flags, eagles and lettering. This one has those, but it also has the barbecue with the grill lid up and the burgers on the bars, the picnic blanket spread with watermelon and lemonade, the parade marching past with a drum and a trumpet, and the fireworks going up over the rooftops and reflecting in the river. Those four pages are the ones a child will recognise from their own Fourth of July.

A real fireworks night, not a cartoon rocket

One page is the display itself: eleven bursts of five different kinds — chrysanthemums, double shells, willows whose rays curve down and end in rings, ring shells drawn as a circle of stars, and palms that split at the tips — spread right across the sheet with rockets rising below. The sky behind them is left white, so there is nothing to colour around.

Things to make

The craft sheet has a flat-pack pinwheel with slit lines and a pin mark at every corner, and five bunting flags with punch holes and completely blank centres so a child letters their own message. The template sheet is nine bare shapes — a star, a flag, a shield, a top hat, a firework, a bunting triangle, a bell, a heart and a rosette — with empty insides and space for scissors between them.

Nothing is printed dark for you

The flag is where these pages usually go wrong: the stripes arrive already filled and the canton arrives solid, which removes the whole point of the picture. Here every stripe is a hollow band, every canton is a white box, and every star on every flag is an outline. So is every feather on the eagle, every fold of Liberty's robe, every pane of the stained glass, and the night sky itself.

Easy through to detailed

The toddler page is four enormous shapes with about fourteen areas on the whole sheet. The middle pages will hold a school-age child for half an hour. The detailed pages — the fireworks display, the patriotic mandala, the zentangle star, the doodle sheet of thirty and the stained glass window — will take an adult most of an evening.
