Nothing arrives already coloured

Valentine artwork is full of things that normally print dark — chocolates, a red rose, the panels of a striped balloon, a post box slot. On these pages none of them are. Every chocolate is an outline told apart by its shape rather than by being darker, every rose is six separate petals around an open centre, and every panel of the balloon is empty white paper.

No writing on anything

Candy hearts normally carry little printed messages and valentine cards normally carry a greeting. Neither do here. Each sweet holds one small open shape instead of a word, and every card front is a plain heart — so nothing on the page is in a language, and nothing is already decided for you.

Twenty pages, not twenty hearts

Four of the pages are heart-led and the rest go somewhere else: a jar of candy hearts, a box of chocolates, a wrapped bouquet, a puppy holding a card, two owls on a branch, children swapping valentines, a heart-shaped hot air balloon and a doodle sheet of twenty small things. If it is specifically hearts you want, there is a separate set of twenty of those.

Good for a classroom party

The easy pages print fast, use little ink and finish in about ten minutes, which suits a table of children working at once. The card-swapping scene and the mailbox are the ones to hand out if you want them talking about it. Print as many copies as you need.

Colour ideas

Red and pink everywhere is the obvious choice and the least interesting one. Try holding the reds back for the hearts alone and doing everything else in warm neutrals — cream, sand, a soft brown — so the hearts are the only bright thing on the sheet.

Printing

Print at 100% scale, not “fit to page”. Choose Letter in the US and Canada, A4 elsewhere. Use cardstock if you are colouring with markers, and if you want to cut a page into a card, print it on the heaviest paper your printer takes. The button at the top bundles all twenty into a single download.
