Search for train colouring pages and most of what comes back is one particular blue tank engine with a face, which belongs to a television company. These are just trains — a steam locomotive, a goods train, a modern high-speed set — so they can be printed for a nursery, a birthday party or a classroom without anyone needing to think about it.
Smoke and wheels drawn as outlines
Two things ruin most train pages. Smoke gets printed as a solid grey or black cloud, and wheels get printed as black discs — between them that is a large part of the picture gone. Here every puff of smoke is an outlined shape and every wheel is an outlined ring with a separate hub, so the smoke can be any colour you like and the wheels are some of the most satisfying parts to fill.
Nothing is grey
Grey is worse than black on a colouring page: it prints as a muddy tone that is neither a line nor an open area. Every page in this set is pure black line on white paper, including the track, which is drawn as plain rails and sleepers rather than a shaded bed of ballast.
The three long ones
The patterned locomotive, the mountain landscape and the train mandala are drawn for adults. The mountain page has a waterfall, a trestle bridge and a forest in it as well as the train.
