Safari Animal Coloring Pages

Nothing arrives already coloured

Safari animals are the hardest subject on the site for this, because so many of them are grey or patterned by definition. On these pages none of that is printed for you. Every elephant, rhino and hippo is an outline left white, the zebra's markings are single thin lines with white paper on both sides, the cheetah's twenty-five spots are open ovals, and every giraffe patch is a shape to colour rather than a shape already filled.

Four elephant pages

Elephants are what most people come to a safari set for, so they get the most room: a big elephant on its own, a baby spraying water from its trunk, a family of three at a waterhole with a calf tucked against its mother, and a patterned elephant covered in paisley and lattice for a long sitting.

Twelve animals in all

Elephant, giraffe, lion, zebra, cheetah, flamingo, gazelle, rhino, hippo, crocodile, monkey and meerkats — plus a safari jeep with two children looking out of the roof, a full savanna scene, and a doodle sheet of twenty small safari things. The hippo and the monkey also have twenty pages each of their own: the hippopotamus coloring pages and the monkey coloring pages.

Which page to start with

The baby elephant, the gazelle and the flamingo are the most forgiving — big shapes, thick lines, and not much to keep track of. The patterned giraffe and the lion mandala are the slow ones and work better with fineliners than pencils.

Colour ideas

Real safari animals are mostly browns and greys, which makes a whole page of them go flat. Try colouring the animals in a narrow warm range and putting all the strong colour in the sky, the grass and the acacia trees behind them — or ignore realism entirely and let a child make the zebra purple, which is the point of leaving every stripe open.
