The letter is drawn properly

Every Z on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. It is three straight strokes — across, down on the diagonal, and across again — and the capital and the lowercase are the same shape at two sizes, which makes the pair easy to learn together.

Twelve things beginning with Z

Zebra, zoo, zip, zucchini, zeppelin, zinnia, zip line, zookeeper, zigzag, zebra crossing, zither and a friendly zombie. Z has fewer words a child knows than almost any other letter, so this set casts a slightly wider net. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of fifteen small Z things, with a lightning bolt, a stack of pebbles, a camera and a striped fish joining them.

Nothing arrives filled in

A zebra is normally a coat of solid black stripes, a zip two dark metal strips, a zigzag a band of alternating black and white, and a crossing a row of black bars. None of them are here — the zebra's markings are single thin lines with white paper on both sides, every zip tooth is drawn separately, and every band and every bar is left empty for a child to colour.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase Z and the big lowercase z are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned Z, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult, and so will the zebra and the zinnia.
