Every X on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. It is two straight strokes crossing in the middle, and the capital and the lowercase are the same shape at two sizes — which makes X one of the easiest pairs in the alphabet to learn, even though it is the hardest to find words for.
Why some of these words do not start with X
Because almost nothing a child knows does. Five of the pictures here genuinely begin with the letter — a xylophone, an x-ray, an x-ray fish, an Xmas tree, and a treasure map where X marks the spot. The other seven have an X inside them instead: a box, a fox, an ox, a saxophone, a taxi, wax crayons and a lynx. Finding the X in the middle of a word is a useful thing to practise, and it is what every alphabet book does at this letter.

Nothing arrives filled in
An x-ray is normally pale bones on a black film, a xylophone a row of eight coloured bars, a taxi a cab with a black-and-white chequer band and a fox an animal with black legs and ears. None of them are here — the x-ray is drawn as outlined bones on white paper, every xylophone bar and every chequer square is empty, and the fox is white from nose to tail tip.
Which page to start with
The big uppercase X and the big lowercase x are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned X, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult, and so will the treasure map.
