The letter is drawn properly

Every W on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. It is the widest letter in the alphabet and the one children most often draw with the wrong number of points — four strokes, three peaks and two valleys — so having the true shape to colour inside is worth more here than on most letters.

Twelve things beginning with W

Whale, watermelon, watch, wagon, walrus, wand, wasp, wheelbarrow, windmill, wolf, worm and wreath. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of small W things — with a waterfall, a wing, a wallet, a waffle, a well, a wizard's hat and a window joining them.

Nothing arrives filled in

A wasp is normally a body of solid black bands, a watermelon a slice studded with black seeds, a whale a solid grey animal and a windmill a mill with dark sails. None of them are here — the wasp's markings are single thin lines with white paper on both sides, every seed is an open teardrop, the whale is an outline you can colour any colour you like, and all four sails are a lattice of empty cells.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase W and the big lowercase w are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned W, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult, and so will the wreath, whose ring is twenty separate leaves.
