The letter is drawn properly

Every V on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. It is two straight strokes meeting at a point — the simplest letter in the alphabet after T — and the capital and lowercase are the same shape at two sizes, which makes the pair easy to learn together.

Twelve things beginning with V

Violin, volcano, van, vase, vegetables, vulture, viking, vest, valentine, vine, violet and vacuum. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small V things — with a violin bow, a vet's bag, a video game controller, a weather vane, a jug, a volleyball and a valley joining them.

Nothing arrives filled in

A violin normally has two solid black f-holes, a vulture is a dark bird with black talons, a van sits on solid black tyres and a volcano pours dark smoke. None of them are here — the f-holes are open ribbons, every talon is an outline, each tyre is a ring inside a ring, and the smoke is a handful of separate open clouds.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase V and the big lowercase v are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned V, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult, and so will the vine, whose grapes are drawn as dozens of separate berries.
