The letter is drawn properly

Every U on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. The capital and the lowercase are nearly the same shape at two sizes, which makes U one of the easier pairs to learn — the only difference worth pointing out is the small tail on the lowercase.

Twelve things beginning with U

Umbrella, unicorn, ukulele, unicycle, uniform, urn, underwear, umpire, UFO, sea urchin, utensils and an arrow pointing up. U has fewer words a child knows than almost any other letter — only Q has fewer — so this set casts a slightly wider net. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of fifteen small U things, with a unicorn's horn, a duckling and an upside-down cake joining them.

Nothing arrives filled in

A ukulele normally has a solid black sound hole, a sea urchin is a dark spiky ball and a UFO hangs in a black night sky. None of them are here — the sound hole is an open ring, the urchin is twenty separate outlined spines around a white body, and the sky behind the saucer is left blank.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase U and the big lowercase u are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned U, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult, and so will the underwear on the line, which has a different pattern on every garment.
