The letter is drawn properly

Every T on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. The capital is the simplest shape in the alphabet — one upright and one crossbar — which makes it a good early letter, and the lowercase differs by a curve at the foot worth pointing out.

Twelve things beginning with T

Teapot, teddy, tent, tiger, tomato, toothbrush, tractor, train, tree, trumpet, tulip and turtle. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small T things — with a taxi, a telephone, a tie, a tooth, a torch, a tray, a triangle and a trophy joining them.

Nothing arrives filled in

A tiger is normally a coat of solid black bands, a train a black engine under dark smoke, a tractor a machine on solid black tyres and a turtle a shell of dark plates. None of them are here — the tiger's markings are single thin lines with white paper on both sides, the smoke is four open clouds, every tyre is a ring inside a ring, and all twelve shell panels are empty.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase T and the big lowercase t are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned T, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult, and so will the tiger.
