Download PDF A4 PNGThe letter is drawn properly
Every S on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. It is the hardest letter in the alphabet to draw freehand — a hand-drawn S goes lopsided almost every time — so having the true curve to colour inside is worth more here than on most letters.
Twelve things beginning with S
Sandwich, seal, sheep, ship, snail, snake, sock, spider, squirrel, star, strawberry and sun. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small S things — with a sandcastle, scissors, a seahorse, a seashell, a skateboard, a sunflower and a swing joining them.
Nothing arrives filled in
A spider is normally a solid black body, a sheep a white fleece on black legs, a snake a pattern of dark bands and a strawberry a dark fruit speckled with darker seeds. None of them are here — the spider is an outline you can colour any colour you like, every hoof is an open shape, the snake's markings are six empty diamonds and all sixteen strawberry seeds are little open teardrops.
Which page to start with
The big uppercase S and the big lowercase s are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned S, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
Printing
Print at 100% scale rather than “fit to page”, and match the file to your paper — Letter or A4. The button at the top bundles all twenty into a single download.
Frequently asked questions
Are these letter S coloring pages free?
Yes — every page is a free PDF with no signup, no email and no watermark on the artwork.
Is there an uppercase and a lowercase S?
Yes — one page for each at full size, a third with the pair together, and both letters printed above every picture page.
What S words are included?
Sandwich, seal, sheep, ship, snail, snake, sock, spider, squirrel, star, strawberry and sun, plus a grid of all twelve and a doodle sheet that adds a sandcastle, scissors, a seahorse, a seashell, a skateboard, a sunflower and a swing.
Is the spider frightening?
No — it is a round cartoon spider with big friendly eyes, drawn as an outline rather than a black body, sitting on an open web.
Are these tracing or handwriting worksheets?
No. Every page here is drawn to be coloured in — there are no dotted letters to trace and no cutting lines.
Which page suits the youngest child?
The big uppercase S: one enormous letter with a thick outline and nothing else on the page. The star is nearly as simple.
Which page suits an older child?
The patterned S, or the snail, whose shell is a long spiral to work around.
What paper size are the files?
Every page comes in both US Letter and A4, so it prints properly on either.
