The letter is drawn properly

Every Q on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. The capital is a full round bowl with a tail crossing it, and the lowercase is a bowl with a descender — the two are worth learning side by side, because the tail is the only thing that tells a Q from an O.

Twelve things beginning with Q

Queen, quilt, quail, quill, quiver, quiche, quokka, quartz, quince, question mark, quad bike and quaver. Q has fewer words a child knows than any other letter, so this set casts a slightly wider net than the others. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small Q things — with a quarter, a queen bee, a quoit and a quilted cushion joining them.

Nothing arrives filled in

A quaver's note head is normally a solid black oval, a question mark a solid dark glyph, a patchwork quilt a chequerboard of dark and light squares and an inkpot a well of black ink. None of them are here — every note head is an open ring, all twenty quilt squares are white paper with a shape to colour in each, and the inkpot is stoppered.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase Q and the big lowercase q are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned Q, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
