The letter is drawn properly

Every P on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. On a page whose job is to teach a child a letter, the shape has to be the right shape — a straight stem with one bowl at the top, and a counter big enough to colour inside.

Twelve things beginning with P

Pig, pizza, parrot, pumpkin, pineapple, pencil, pear, peacock, puppy, present, popcorn and penguin. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small P things — with a paintbrush, a palm tree, a palette, a purse, a pyramid and a plane joining them.

Nothing arrives filled in

A penguin is normally a bird with a solid black back, a peacock's tail a fan of dark eyespots, a pizza a scatter of dark pepperoni and a popcorn tub a set of red and white stripes. None of them are here — every eyespot is a pair of open rings, every slice of pepperoni is an outline, and all seven bands of the tub are white paper waiting for a colour.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase P and the big lowercase p are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned P, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
