The letter is drawn properly

Every N on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. On a page whose job is to teach a child a letter, the shape has to be the right shape — two upright stems and one clean diagonal between them, with a line thick enough to colour inside.

Twelve things beginning with N

Nest, net, nurse, narwhal, nuts, noodles, necklace, newspaper, notebook, needle, nightgown and newt. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small N things — with a nail, a napkin, a nectarine, a nutcracker, a nightingale and a nozzle joining them.

Nothing arrives filled in

A newspaper is normally blocks of dark grey text, a nest a dark tangle of twigs, a narwhal a solid grey whale and a bowl of noodles a pool of dark broth. None of them are here — the newspaper's columns are empty white panels, the nest is twenty-five separate twigs you could count, and the bowl is white paper with the strands drawn as pairs of lines.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase N and the big lowercase n are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned N, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
