The letter is drawn properly

Every J on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. On a page whose job is to teach a child a letter, the shape has to be the right shape — a straight stem with a hook at the foot, and the lowercase j keeping both its dot and its descender.

Twelve things beginning with J

Jellyfish, jet, jeep, jam, juggler, jacket, jack-o-lantern, jigsaw, jewel, jump rope, jeans and jungle. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small J things — with a jug, a juice carton, jellybeans, a jester hat and a jay joining them.

Nothing arrives filled in

A jack-o-lantern's carved face is normally three black triangles and a black grin, a jellyfish a dark trailing mass, a cut jewel a dark faceted stone and a pair of jeans a solid blue garment. None of them are here — the pumpkin's eyes are thin open triangles with a candle showing through its teeth, the jellyfish trails eight separate open ribbons, and every facet of the jewel is white paper.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase J and the big lowercase j are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned J, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
